Philanthropy in Majelis Taklim as Contesting Space: Between Women’s Subjectivities and Islamist Movement in Surakarta

This study examines the response of women’s majelis taklimin Surakarta to Islamist movement, through philanthropic activities.This is focused on interviewing congregations and administrators three taklim-Al Husna, Humaira, Da'wah Squad. I argue that taklimis a space express subjectivities pieties. shows there are divided activities at group individual level.At (majelis) level, especially Al potential for expansion movement proven by their support group's philanthropy. Squad Humaira different in limiting Islamism organizing independent creative philanthropy targets wider beneficiaries.
